(AP) ? In thousands of Earth orbits, the space shuttle Endeavour traveled 123 million miles. But the last few miles of its final journey are proving hard to get through.

Endeavour's 12-mile crawl across Los Angeles to the California Science Museum hit repeated delays Saturday, leaving expectant crowds along city streets and at the destination slowly dwindling.

Officials estimated the shuttle, originally expected to finish the trip early Saturday evening, would not arrive until 6 a.m. PDT or later Sunday.

At times on Saturday it seemed the only thing moving was the shuttle's fast-changing ETA.

The day started off promising, with Endeavour 90 minutes ahead of schedule. But accumulated hurdles and hiccups caused it to run hours behind at day's end.

The problems included longer than expected maintenance of the rig carrying the shuttle and physical obstacles within the shuttle's wingspan including light posts, building edges, and most of all trees.

In a scene that repeated itself many times, a small tree on the narrowest section of the move brought the procession to a stop, forcing crews to find creative ways to dip a wing under or raise it over the tree without having to cut it down.

Some 400 trees had been removed to avoid such situations, but officials said most of the trees that gave them trouble could not be cut down because they were old or treasured for other reasons, including some planted in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The crowd had its problems too. Despite temperatures in the mid-70s, several dozen people were treated for heat-related injuries after a long day in the sun, according to fire officials.

But it was a happy, peaceful crowd, with firefighters having only to respond to a sheared hydrant and a small rubbish fire, and no reports of any arrests.

And despite the late problems the mood for most of the day was festive.

At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards as it inched through working-class streets of southern Los Angeles.

Along the 12-mile course, thousands marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a light post.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Dean Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit who began waiting before dawn to get a glimpse of Endeavour.

Unlike other high-profile events like the Academy Awards or the Rose Parade, the procession was centered in some of the area's most economically downtrodden and troubled places. The shuttle passed several gritty areas and shuttered businesses, and rolled down many streets that were aflame two decades earlier during the 1992 riots brought on by the Rodney King beating.

"Having a shuttle come through this area of high poverty, it can only be a good thing" for the community," said Damian Pipkins, a volunteer at Eso Won Books.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. When it reached a freeway overpass that night, it was towed by a truck.

The shuttle made a late-morning pit stop Saturday at the Forum ? former home of the Los Angeles Lakers ? where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. It was late to its second public celebration that included a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down.

Others thought it was a decent trade.

"If you have to go through a little bit of pain to have something nice for the community, then it's worth it," said Pamela Tucker, who lives a block away from Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek, like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

There were consequences. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

(AP) ? The Israeli government has called a general election for Jan. 22, and polls suggest Benjamin Netanyahu's rightist-religious coalition is likely to win a renewed majority ? but an array of wild cards make the outcome of this campaign unpredictable nonetheless.

The stakes are high: A Netanyahu re-election could make an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear program more likely, risking regional war and global economic crisis. And it could end whatever small chance still exists of a genuine Israeli pullout from even parts of the West Bank ? something the Israeli opposition is almost desperate to bring about, but Netanyahu's nationalist allies fervently oppose.

The vote also comes at a pivotal point in the increasingly acrimonious cultural clash between Western-oriented liberals and Netanyahu's resilient alliance of social conservatives, security hawks and fundamentalist Jews.

That dichotomy is mirrored in Israel's traditional electoral map, a bewildering affair that nonetheless reduces to two rival "blocs" vying for 61 out of 120 Knesset seats ? the threshold needed to form a government.

The "left" bloc, historically led by the Labor Party, wants the West Bank and Gaza ? captured from Jordan and Egypt respectively in the 1967 war ? either traded for peace or separated from Israel in some other way to protect a Jewish majority within "Israel proper." Jews currently make up about three-quarters of Israel's population, but when the West Bank and Gaza are included, the breakdown between Jews and Arabs is close to 50/50. Smaller dovish groups and parties from Israel's Arab minority are also in this bloc.

The "right" bloc is led by Netanyahu's Likud, which historically has been hostile to territorial concessions. Netanyahu now says he is ready for a limited Palestinian state in some of the West Bank ? yet his government continues to build Jewish settlements deep inside it and few take him at his word. Rounding out the bloc are even more nationalist groupings and religious parties eager to deepen the Jewish character of the state.

Polls suggest the right could win about 65 Knesset seats ? a near-default majority that has mostly held for decades, built in part by the demographic advantage of a religious minority with high birthrates.

It is only occasionally overturned, either by circumstance or machination: An experiment with direct election of the prime minister resulted in a win for Labor's Ehud Barak in 1999. The defection of Likud Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ? creator of the centrist Kadima Party that cannibalized Likud and ended up in the left bloc ? led to the more dovish Ehud Olmert serving as premier from 2006-9.

The new campaign presents a significant number of wild cards that could affect the result:

THE CENTER

Popular dissatisfaction with the left-right dichotomy occasionally gives rise to "centrist parties" that claim they might align with either bloc. But these days such parties ? whose support and makeup generally reflects the secular and Westernized side of Israel ? find their natural location with the left, as Kadima did, and amount to a device for taking votes from the right.

The newest centrist offering is Yesh Atid (There Is A Future), built around the popularity of 49-year-old Yair Lapid ? a former TV news anchor, talk show host, newspaper columnist, movie star, mystery novelist and amateur boxer. Polls show he could lead one of the largest parties, with up to 19 seats. Depending on whom he chooses to run by his side, he seems to have a shot at taking votes from the right.

A RIVAL

Whereas Netanyuahu is unchallenged in his bloc, the left is splintered into at least three mid-sized parties: a somewhat resurgent Labor, with former journalist Shelly Yachimovich as its leader, running mostly on social issues such as redistribution of wealth; Kadima, now led by the relatively unpopular former military chief Shaul Mofaz; and Yesh Atid.

There is tremendous pressure on them to unite, driven by the idea that this would change the psychology of the race and draw support greater than the sum of the left's current parts. Indeed, a poll in the Jerusalem Post found that a unified party would outpoll Likud and become the largest party.

Would that be enough to crack the advantage of the wider right bloc? That may depend on whether a galvanizing figure is brought in to lead it.

The current speculation focuses on an Olmert comeback, which he is believed to be considering and which would be a gamble. Forced from office four years ago by a corruption scandal, he has been cleared of most charges but still faces trial in a bribery case. The backup is Tzipi Livni, Olmert's foreign minister and a former Kadima leader ? who is also said to be mulling the creation of yet another centrist party.

THE GENERAL

Gabi Ashkenazi, who was military chief until last year, is so popular that it is generally accepted that the recent law freezing top security officials out of politics for three years after their retirement was formulated mostly to keep him from leading the left against Netanyahu ? and so in popular parlance it bears his name.

Taciturn and tough-looking, with security credentials and of politically useful mixed European and Middle Eastern heritage, he is believed to have strong appeal to the right. The much-discussed scenario has him campaigning for the left under the understanding that if the bloc wins it would repeal the "Ashkenazi Law" and appoint him defense minister.

DEFECTIONS

Although the right bloc has propped Netanyahu nicely for four years, two potential defections exist. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, head of the mid-sized Yisrael Beiteinu party, is an aggressive nationalist who nonetheless took part in the last Kadima government, is bitter about a years-long corruption investigation, and harbors ambitions of leading the right bloc that suggest an interest in seeing Netanyahu go down. And Arieh Deri, the only major ultra-Orthodox leader who is seen as moderate on the Palestinians, is returning to politics after a jail spell and a long hiatus; if he is not reinstated as head of the religious Shas Party many expect him to run against it, taking some of its dozen-odd seats and possibly delivering them to the left.

IRAN

Some in Netanyahu's circle cast the election as a referendum on attacking Iran ? or at least on Israel's right to act militarily to prevent the Islamic Republic from achieving nuclear weapons capability. Normally, on security issues, Israelis do turn hawkish at the polls.

But this one is complicated: The security establishment considers the talk of an attack reckless and seems to oppose the idea; much of the world is arrayed against the notion, seeking more time for economic sanctions to force Iran's hand; and polls show the Israeli public ? fearing a massive counterstrike including missiles on their cities and mayhem on their borders ? opposes any move that is not coordinated with the United States. It could make very uncomfortable campaigning for Netanyahu.

IT'S THE ECONOMY

Netanyahu supporters nonetheless hope the election hinges on the usual strategic issues, especially the Palestinians. On that well-worn ground, Likud is helped by the perception here that the Palestinians are sticking to unreasonably maximalist positions ? including a division of Jerusalem that would mean a potentially tense border running right through the downtown of the holy city.

But if the left can change the discourse, Netanyahu is vulnerable on two issues.

So many Israelis are unhappy with the economy ? surprisingly good macroeconomic figures alongside tremendous income gaps and widespread poverty ? that a social protest movement largely aimed against the government last year sent hundreds of thousands to the streets. If this becomes an election issue it could galvanize the left vote ? which historically, unlike the disciplined masses of the religious right, tends to be lazy on election day.

And Netanyahu is dangerously exposed on the question of ending the current system of draft exemptions for tens of thousands in the burgeoning ultra-Orthodox minority ? ordered earlier this year by the Supreme Court, supported by most Israelis, and largely ignored by his government. The secular majority, including many on the right, is increasingly alarmed by Orthodox efforts to segregate the sexes in public, their widespread reliance on state handouts, and their school system, which turns out Torah scholars who know little English or math and have few skills for the work world. Netanyahu's utter dependence on their parties' votes for the right bloc's majority could focus minds, drive away the center and amount to his Achilles' heel in this campaign.

Britain's best ski slopes: Hit the snow close to home at Tamworth ...

You don?t need your passport to master the powder this winter ? we find Britain?s best ski slopes to practice on closer to home

Save yourself a few quid this year by skipping the pricey ski trips abroad. Rather than fork out for flights and expensive accommodation in the Alps or the US, you can hit up slopes much closer to home for a bargain snowy session.

Across the country there are centres offering tip-top skiing and snowboarding facilities.

And we?re not talking about any of that uninspiring dry rubber nonsense ? these places have plenty of the white stuff (or at least the man-made version) to practice on. Wrap up warm and get involved at our pick of the biggest and best slopes in the country.

SnowDome, Tamworth

The White Stuff: Crisp, powdery snow covers the steep 170m slope at SnowDome ? perfect for practising your plough technique or snowboard turns.

With two 25m- and 30m-long teaching slopes in the Snow Academy areas, separated from the fast-paced chaos of the main skiing stretch, it?s ideal for newbies.

Book an hour?s lesson for ?27 and turn up wearing warm clothes, the rest ? equipment and protecive head gear ? is provided.

More chilly thrills: Adrenaline tubing is every bit as fun as it sounds. Plonk yourself in one of the inflatable rings
? specially designed to glide smoothly over snow ? and hurtle down the slopes at top speed.

The best thing about tubing here is that it?s for big kids only, so you can go hell for leather without having to spend time waiting behind a queue of tots. A 30-minute session is ?9.

snowdome.co.uk

Chill Factore, Manchester

The white stuff: As if Manchester wasn?t chilly enough already, Chill Factore?s 180m slope brings the temperature down even further, as it?s a shivery -1.5?C inside.

There?s a great snowboarding scene here, with taster sessions (?27 for an hour-long group lesson) for newbies.

If you?re already a bit of a pro, you can take private lessons to learn even flashier flips and spins. You big show off.?

More chilly thrills: Does riding an ?Avalanche? sound extreme enough for you? If you?re not put off by visions of being buried alive in a snowstorm, give snow-sphering a roll.

You?ll be harnessed in to a huge plastic ball, which is four metres in diameter, then pushed down the slope, getting up to an exhilarating 30mph.

Turning 360 degrees, this isn?t for the faint-hearted ? you?ll have to steady your shaking knees after with a stiff apr?s-ski drink at the bar overlooking the slopes. Snow-sphering costs ?24.50 for a two-hour session.

Pausing live TV is about to get easier. All you?ll have to do is get up and walk out of the view of the screen, according to researchers working on the technology.

Lone survivor testifies at Ohio Craigslist trial

AKRON, Ohio (AP) ? The lone survivor of a deadly plot to lure victims with phony Craigslist job offers testified against a 17-year-old triple-murder suspect on Friday and identified him as an accomplice to the triggerman.

Scott Davis, the star witness as the prosecution began presenting its aggravated murder case against Brogan Rafferty, told a harrowing story of running for his life after he was shot in the arm and hiding in the woods of southeast Ohio for hours after a farm job interview ended in a burst of gunfire.

"I was worried about bleeding to death," Davis testified.

Prosecutors say the plot involving Rafferty and self-styled chaplain Richard Beasley led to the killings of three men desperate for work who responded to Craigslist job ads and to Davis' shooting.

Davis, testifying in a crowded, hushed courtroom, described how he responded to one such ad, sold his South Carolina business and moved last year to be closer to his family in the Canton area.

Davis said he, a man who called himself "Jack" and Rafferty shared a restaurant breakfast before Rafferty drove the trio to an isolated Noble County farm, ostensibly to show Davis where he would be working as a farmhand and live in a trailer with hunting rights.

Prosecutors say "Jack" was Beasley, Rafferty's co-defendant and mentor. Beasley, 53, of Akron, has pleaded not guilty and will be tried separately.

According to Davis, "Jack" urged him into a wooded area to look for farm equipment and eventually suggested they turn back.

"I heard a curse word and then a gun cock," Davis, 49, testified.

Davis said he turned around and found himself face-to-face with a handgun. He said he pushed the weapon aside, was wounded in the arm and fled as "Jack" fired at him.

Davis said he ran as fast as he could "but I kept falling down." He said he eventually hid in a creek bed and tried to stop the bleeding amid rising pain. Fearing loss of blood would kill him, Davis said he climbed to a hilltop in the moonlit night to look for a house. He found one and managed to get there and ask for a phone to dial 911.

"I was getting weak at that point," Davis testified.

Under questioning by prosecutor Emily Pelphrey, Davis identified the younger accomplice by describing the defendant's courtroom outfit.

Under cross-examination by defense attorney John Alexander, Davis testified that "Jack" had orchestrated the farm visit and fired at him.

Alexander posed repeated questions fingering Beasley as the mastermind, each time beginning, "'Jack' was the one ... "

In her opening statement, Pelphrey said Rafferty chose to participate in the three killings and Davis' wounding, even if he wasn't the triggerman. Rafferty, of nearby Stow, kept his head down and took notes as the alleged plot was detailed for the jury.

Pelphrey showed the jury timelines for each victim and said they had been desperate to improve their lives or find "the light at the end of the tunnel." With each victim, a photo of their graves was shown on a big TV screen.

The defendant was a quick student of the alleged plot and "a student of violent crime," Pelphrey told jurors.

"He made the choices he wanted to make," she said.

Alexander told jurors Rafferty never participated voluntarily and was afraid that Beasley would kill him and his relatives if he didn't cooperate and keep silent. As for the alleged plot to lure job-seekers, Alexander said, Rafferty "had no idea any of this was going on."

The first killing came without warning for Rafferty, according to Alexander. Afterward, Beasley warned Rafferty to keep quiet by reminding him that he knew where Rafferty's mother and sister lived, the defense lawyer said.

That was an implied threat to cooperate and keep quiet, Alexander said. "He would kill them if Brogan says anything," Alexander told jurors.

The body of David Pauley, 51, of Norfolk, Va., was found on Noble County property owned by a coal company and often leased to hunters.

Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon, was found in a shallow grave near an Akron-area shopping mall. He had been shot in the head.

The body of Ralph Geiger, 55, of Akron, was found in Noble County, dead of a gunshot wound to the head.

Beasley was a Texas parolee who returned to Ohio in 2004 after serving time on a burglary conviction. He was awaiting trial on prostitution and drug charges when authorities took him into custody.

Police have said a halfway house he ran in Akron was a front for prostitution. Authorities said he was a mentor for Rafferty and had befriended him.

Clinton lends star power to Democratic candidates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Twelve years after leaving the White House, Bill Clinton is campaigning as if he's in the political race of his life.

In some ways, he is. Clinton is endorsing President Barack Obama and Democrats in tight races for the House and Senate. But he's also burnishing a legacy as the party's elder statesman, rock star, global humanitarian and husband of Hillary Rodham Clinton, a once-and-perhaps-future presidential candidate herself.

In Indianapolis on Friday to boost Senate Democratic hopeful Joe Donnelly, Clinton said he hadn't expected to be so involved in the 2012 campaign. But Hillary Clinton is busy as secretary of state, and daughter Chelsea works for a broadcast network, he noted.

"So you're stuck with me," Clinton told the crowd.

Obama and other Democrats ? maybe even Clinton himself ? wouldn't have it any other way.

Bitter at the way Al Gore campaigned largely without him in 2000, Clinton has become Obama's surrogate in chief in a nationwide campaign tour, lending his oratorical skill and folksy style to increasingly personal contests in races that, four weeks out, show few signs of budging. Clinton is especially helpful in conservative states where Democratic candidates aren't eager to appear with the unpopular Obama. Clinton is a leading expert in the art of the political comeback ? a skill the struggling Obama could use now.

Also, there's this uncomfortable truth: Obama needs Clinton to generate support with white, working-class and independent voters who were drawn to Clinton and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney ? but who haven't warmed to Obama.

"If there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," Romney joked in his own speech at the Clinton Global Initiative last month, a nod to Clinton's convention speech.

Obama himself has cracked that he should appoint Clinton "secretary of explaining stuff."

The lighthearted tone and determined cooperation between Obama and Clinton is hard-won and may not end with the 2012 campaign.

The bruising 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton damaged relations between the families. Obama's appointment of Hillary Clinton to serve as his secretary of state ? and her successes in the job ? healed the relationship enough for Clinton to step in to help with Obama's re-election. And if Obama has Bill Clinton to thank for a second term, one way to pay back the debt could be Obama's support for a Hillary Clinton campaign of the future.

Among voters generally, Bill Clinton is more appealing than Obama. A CBS News/New York Times poll in September found 66 percent of registered voters with a favorable view of Clinton, compared with 45 percent for Obama.

"He's got a way of communicating complex ideas in plain ways that no one else has," said Greg Haas, who ran Clinton's 1992 campaign in Ohio and who is Democratic chairman in Franklin County, which includes Columbus. "No one in my lifetime. He's in a class by himself."

Clinton symbolizes good economic times for many voters, including a federal budget that was balanced under his leadership. His convention speech rebutted Romney's attacks on Obama and accused Romney of pushing an economic plan that is doomed to fail. Clinton lends Obama credibility on the issue that voters consistently name as their top concern: the economy.

Clinton rocketed out of the party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., last month energized by the massive crowd's roaring reaction to his partly ad-libbed call to arms. His star newly shined, Clinton plunged into a two-day swing in the key state of Florida and has since added stops for Obama in a string of political battlegrounds.

During one recent week, Clinton joined Obama at a meeting with about a dozen supporters at a private residence in Los Angeles; he hosted a fundraiser with about 160 people who bought tickets starting at $1,000; he spoke at a rally for four northern California Democrats in tight House races; he was in Nevada for a rally for Obama and Democratic Senate candidate Shelley Berkley; and he was at Arizona State University rally with Democratic Senate candidate Richard Carmona. Then came stops in Iowa and Indiana for more rallies with Senate and congressional candidates as well as fundraising events.

He's expected to keep up the pace until Election Day.

All told, Clinton has appeared at no fewer than 32 fundraisers and 15 rallies for Obama. One big-ticket reception at a private New York City residence with Clinton last June drew 47 people who paid $40,000 apiece. On Friday, he joined Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., for a Detroit-area fundraiser that her campaign said brought in about $350,000 for Michigan Democrats.

During a recent Las Vegas rally for Obama and other Democratic candidates, Clinton showcased his ability to poke fun at foes without demonizing them. He mocked Romney's move to the political center in the opening presidential debate.

"I had a different reaction to that first debate than a lot of people did," Clinton told the crowd. "I thought, 'Wow, here's old moderate Mitt. Where ya been, boy?'"

Clinton is also building favor with local Democrats, many of whom are longtime allies.

"He generates a huge amount of media attention when he's visiting these states," said Fergus Cullen, a former New Hampshire GOP state party chairman.

Cullen said Clinton's visit earlier this year to New Hampshire to endorse Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Maggie Hassan, a Clinton ally in 2008, provided a stamp of party establishment approval that helped Hassan win her competitive primary.

Yet Clinton's prominent campaign role could pose some potential downsides for Democrats. Some Democrats fret Clinton could overshadow Obama. A Pew Research Center poll last month showed 29 percent of those surveyed said Clinton's convention speech was the highlight of the party gathering, while just 16 percent called Obama's speech the highlight.

But there's no hiding the Clinton magic during an election year.

In Indianapolis on Friday, the former president noted that he had stayed the night before in Washington with Hillary, celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary. He recalled that she told him she wished she could come with him to campaign this year.

One of the event organizers had apologized to the former president for the size of the crowd, saying "that's as good as we can do for a crowd here except for a basketball game."

Clinton, famously fond of a crowd of any size, grinned.

"I'll take that," he said.

Turkey condemns U.N. inertia as Syrian conflict deepens

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rebels battled to hold onto Syria's main north-south highway on Friday as government forces fought insurgents on several fronts across the country.

The rebels captured an air defense base east of Syria's biggest city, Aleppo, and government forces unleashed air strikes and artillery bombardments on the western city of Homs, activists said.

On the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkey scrambled two fighter jets after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin, the site of fierce fighting between rebels and government forces this week.

Tensions between Ankara and Damascus are worsening at a time when the 19-month-old conflict is intensifying with no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough and growing concerns that the violence could spread across the Middle East.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gave a death toll for Thursday of more than 260 people, including civilians and combatants on both sides, as fighting raged in the capital and the north, west and east of the country.

It said 92 soldiers had been killed on Thursday, one of the highest daily tolls on the government side since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out in March 2011.

The official SANA news agency also reported fighting nationwide and said dozens of rebels, which it called "mercenary terrorists", had been killed.

In Idlib, activists said opposition fighters captured about 400 soldiers and loyalist militiamen this week in Western Jisr al-Shoughour, a hilly agricultural area.

Photos released by the opposition showed dozens of uniformed soldiers sitting on the ground in what appeared to be a hangar.

"Around 400 loyalist troops have been captured. Many of them were poor conscripts who were let go. The more important officers are being interrogated," a rebel source said.

The reports could not be independently verified but they indicate an intensifying conflict, with the daily body counts of the past few weeks far exceeding previous months.

HIGHWAY HELL

The British-based Observatory, which has a network of monitors in Syria, reported fighting at a military barracks close to Maarat al-Nuaman, a town on the highway from Homs to Aleppo in the northwest.

Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, has been contested since July and the rebel capture of Maarat al-Nuaman this week cut the main route for Assad's military to resupply and reinforce it.

Opposition sources said rebels on Thursday halted an armored army column at Khan Sheikhoun which had been sent from Hama to retake Maarat al-Nuaman, 70 km (40 miles) south of Aleppo. They also reported artillery barrages along the highway between Khan Sheikhoun and Maarat in the past 72 hours.

SANA said government forces were trying to clear Aleppo's Karm al-Jabal area of rebels on Friday.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which started out as a popular uprising against four decades of Assad family rule and domination by their Alawite sect and then spiraled into civil war.

Fighting has also spilled over its borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, stoking fears that the war could drag in its neighbors.

Since Syrian bombardments hit Turkish villages last week, Ankara and Damascus have squared off militarily and rhetorically, with Turkey moving troops to the border and threatening to retaliate if there is further cross-border bloodshed.

Turkey infuriated Syria on Wednesday when it forced a passenger plane flying from Russia to Syria to land in Ankara. Turkish authorities said it was carrying Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army, a charge denied by Damascus and Moscow.

Turkey allows rebels sanctuary on its soil and has led calls, along with Western powers and Gulf Arab states, for Assad to step down. The Syrian president counts on the support of Russia and Iran.

Despite the bluster, most analysts believe that neither Syria nor Turkey want matters to get out of hand. The United States and European powers have also shown no desire to intervene militarily, despite much hand-wringing over the bloodshed.

HOMS UNDER FIRE AGAIN

Assad's forces also ramped up air strikes and artillery barrages against Homs on Friday, a day after they took heavy losses trying to overrun the rebel-held Khalidiya district, opposition activists said.

"There are 50 bodies of soldiers and shabbiha (militia) on the streets in Khalidiya and regime troops cannot retrieve them," said Ahmad Tarkawi, a local opposition leader.

"The situation remains tough. The regime is now using a multiple rings tactic to surround Homs."

Homs, 140 km (90 miles) north of Damascus, was the focus of world attention in February when a government siege pulverized rebel-held districts and killed hundreds of fighters and civilians. It is also a gateway to the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean, heartland of Assad's minority Alawite sect.

Video footage showed a six-storey building in Khalidiya flattened by an airstrike.

Shelling and aerial bombardments also hit Sunni Muslim towns near Homs to prevent rebels in the countryside from joining the battle for Homs, opposition activist Abu Yazan said.

Meanwhile, the refugee crisis grew ever more acute, with the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR saying that between 2,000 and 3,000 people were fleeing across borders every day from Syria.

The total number of refugees now stood at more than 340,000, Melissa Fleming, a UNHCR spokeswoman, said in Geneva.

"And now into the winter months, more and more of these people are going to be living in camp situations. So more and more of these people are going to be spending the winter in tents," she said.

Wells Fargo posts record quarterly profit, revs disappoint

(Reuters) - Wells Fargo & Co reported record quarterly profit on Friday on a surge in mortgage lending, but revenue and a key banking measure fell short of analysts' estimates, sending shares down 3.3 percent.

Wells Fargo posted third-quarter earnings of 88 cents per share, topping the analysts' consensus estimate of 87 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

But total revenue of $21.2 billion missed the $21.47 billion that analysts had expected.

Net income in the quarter rose 22 percent from a year ago to a record $4.9 billion.

The largest U.S. home lender reported that mortgage banking revenue jumped more than 50 percent from a year ago to $2.8 billion. The bank said it decided to hold onto $9.8 billion in mortgages it could have sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac , giving up $200 million in potential fee income but boosting total loans.

Banks are experiencing a jump in home lending as borrowers refinance their homes at low interest rates. Wells Fargo made $139 billion in mortgages versus $89 billion a year ago, but up only slightly from the second quarter.

The bank's net interest margin - the spread it makes on what it pays on deposits and makes on loans - fell to 3.66 percent from 3.91 percent in the second quarter, a bigger drop than it had warned of last month. Banks are seeing the margin shrink as older loans with higher interest rates are paid down.

"The margin came in much worse than we expected, but mortgage banking was better," Keefe, Bruyette & Woods analyst Frederick Cannon wrote in a note to clients. "Overall, this was a slight beat this quarter, but the margin matters more."

The bank blamed the margin decline on a drop in fee income compared with the second quarter, a cautious approach in its investment portfolio and low interest rates.

Shares in the fourth largest U.S. bank dropped 3.3 percent to $34.02.

TOTAL LOANS UP

Total loans increased by $7.4 billion, or about 1 percent, from June 30 to $782.6 billion.

The bank said the addition of $9.8 billion in mortgages drove $11.9 billion in core loan growth, excluding a $4.5 billion decrease in a portfolio of loans that it no longer makes.

Wells Fargo also saw increases in auto, credit card, student and commercial loans.

The bank set aside less money for future loan losses than it actually charged off in the third quarter - a sign that it believes credit quality is improving.

Wells Fargo said some of the third-quarter loan losses resulted from new regulations that will not have an effect in future quarters.

JPMorgan Chase & Co , the largest U.S. bank, also reported results on Friday. It said profits rose 34 percent to a record $5.71 billion.

Wells Fargo has emerged from the financial crisis as the dominant U.S. mortgage lender, making three times as many loans as its nearest competitor. But it has also faced headaches in the business lately.

This week, the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan filed a lawsuit accusing the bank of recklessly underwriting government-insured home loans. The bank has denied the allegations.

The bank also needed to set aside more money to cover investor requests to buy back soured mortgage loans it sold off during the housing boom. It added $462 million to those reserves in the third quarter, down from $669 million in the second quarter but up from $390 million a year ago.

Space shuttle embarks on 12-mile trip to LA museum

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? At its prime, the space shuttle Endeavour cruised around the Earth at 17,500 mph, faster than a speeding bullet.

In retirement, it's crawling along at a sluggish 2 mph, a pace that rush-hour commuters can sympathize with.

Endeavour's 12-mile road trip kicked off shortly before midnight Thursday as it moved from its Los Angeles International Airport hangar en route to the California Science Center, its ultimate destination, said Benjamin Scheier of the center.

The space craft was escorted by a security entourage as it moved across the tarmac but was briefly delayed after a minor problem developed with its trailer, Los Angeles police Sgt. Rudy Lopez said. The problem was quickly repaired and Scheier said it reached the street shortly after 2 a.m. PDT Friday.

Endeavour was to travel slowly on the street for about two hours to a private parking lot where it will have a nine-hour layover as crews deal with power lines father ahead on the route.

While the shuttle will have the streets and sidewalks to itself during the two-day journey as it inches past strip malls, storefronts, apartment buildings and front lawns, it will be a constant stop-and-go commute.

Ushering a shuttle through an urban core is a logistical challenge that took almost a year to plan. Guarded by a security detail reminiscent of a presidential visit, police enforced rolling street and sidewalk closures as early as Thursday night in some locations and discouraged spectators from swarming side streets.

The behemoth transport has caused headaches for shopkeepers along the route who counted on cheering crowds jamming the curbs to boost business.

In the days leading up to Endeavour's move, the owners of Randy's Donuts sold shuttle-shaped pastries emblazoned with the NASA logo and even hung a shuttle replica inside the giant doughnut hole sign visible from the busy Interstate 405.

Co-owner Larry Weintraub planned to watch the shuttle creep by the roadside sign, which has been featured in several movies. But the store, which serves up sweets 24-7, will be closed Friday night.

"I'm still excited, but I'm disappointed that people aren't going to be able to stand in the streets and shout 'Yay,'" he said.

Saturday is typically the busiest day for James Fugate, who co-owns Eso Won Books in South Los Angeles. But with Endeavour expected to shuffle through, Fugate braced for a ho-hum day in sales.

"We don't close because we're slow. That's when you pull out a book to read," he said.

The baby of the shuttle fleet, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986, killing seven astronauts. It thundered off the launch pad 25 times, orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times and racked up 123 million miles.

Last month, it wowed throngs with a dizzying aerial loop, soaring over the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood Sign and other California landmarks while strapped to the back of a modified 747 before finally landing at LAX.

The last leg of Endeavour's retirement journey skips the tourist attractions and instead, winds through blue-collar communities in southern Los Angeles County. While viewing will be severely curtailed due to sidewalk shutdowns, crowds are still expected.

Moving the 170,000-pound Endeavour requires a specialized 160-wheel carrier typically used to haul oil rigs, bridges and heavy equipment. The wheels can spin in any direction, allowing the shuttle to zigzag past obstacles. An operator walks alongside, controlling the movements via joystick. Several spotters along the wings are on the lookout for hazards.

To make room for the five-story-tall shuttle and its 78-foot wingspan, some 400 trees were chopped down, cable and telephone lines were raised, and steel plates were laid down to protect the streets and underground utilities.

Endeavour will mostly travel on wide boulevards with some boasting as many lanes as a freeway. While there have been advance preparations, there is remaining work to be done during the move, including de-energizing power lines. Southern California Edison warned of outages in the suburb of Inglewood.

One of the trickiest parts involves trundling through a narrow residential street with apartment buildings on both sides. With Endeavour's wings expected to intrude into driveways, residents have been told to stay indoors until the shuttle passes.

The route was selected after ruling out other options. Dismantling the shuttle would have ruined the delicate heat tiles. Helicoptering it to its destination was not feasible. Neither was crossing on freeways since the shuttle is too big to fit through the underpasses. The cost of transporting it cross-town was estimated at over $10 million.

As complex as the latest endeavor is, Southern California is no stranger to moving heavy things.

In 1946, Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" aircraft was built in sections and hauled from Culver City to Long Beach, 30 miles away. In 1984, an old United Airlines DC-8, with its wings and tail disassembled, was towed from Long Beach to the science center.

Earlier this year, a two-story-tall chunk of granite was hauled 105 miles from a rock quarry to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

American Restaurant Concepts, Inc. Comments On The Economy ...

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 11, 2012 // PRNewswire // -- American Restaurant Concepts, Inc. (OTCBB: ANPZ), the operator and franchisor of America's award-winning Dick's Wings? restaurants, announced today that the improving U.S. and Florida economies are generating favorable trends within the restaurant industry, which should benefit the Company over the next several years.

National restaurant industry trends have turned favorable for American Restaurant Concepts. The National Restaurant Association (NRA) recently stated that restaurant industry sales posted a modest gain in August. Buoyed by stronger same-store sales and customer traffic levels, the NRA's Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) ? a monthly composite index that tracks the health and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry ? stood at 100.6 in August, up 0.4 percent from July and the first increase in five months. According to the NRA, August represented the tenth consecutive month that the RPI stood above 100, which signifies continued expansion in the index of key industry indicators.

The NRA also stated that restaurant operators nationally reported positive same-store sales for the 15th consecutive month, with August results representing a solid improvement over the July performance. Approximately 61% of restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain between August 2011 and August 2012, up from 53% who reported positive sales in July. According to the U.S. Foodservice Industry Forecast released in August 2012 by Technomic, a global foodservice industry firm, growth in retail sales for restaurants and bars are expected to accelerate from 4.3% during 2012 to 4.7% during 2013.

Economic growth is also improving in Florida, where almost all of American Restaurant Concepts' restaurants are located. On Tuesday, September 25th, the University of Florida's Bureau of Economic and Business Research released its consumer confidence index and stated that all five components that make up the survey's consumer confidence metric increased over the past month. September's overall index rose to 79, its highest level since October 2007. According to the survey, Floridians are feeling more confident in their finances and the economy now, than they have in five years.

"While the last few years have been rough on everyone, the national and Florida economies are bouncing back," stated Michael Rosenberger, CEO of American Restaurant Concepts. "Of particular importance to us is that growth in the restaurant industry remains strong and is expected to become stronger in the future. While we expect to generate substantial growth in our revenue and profits for the foreseeable future, the strengthening economy, combined with Americans' growing preference for quality dining experiences, should bode very well for American Restaurant Concepts over the next several years."

It's Stupid to Assume That 'Baby Boomers' Are Tech Novices ...

I?m a baby boomer ? and so is Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak and the late Steve Jobs. It was my generation that invented personal computers. ?Many of us used CP/M, DOS or even Unix long before Macs and PCs had graphical user interfaces. We were the ones who had to know how use escape codes to get our printers to work and sometimes wound up building our own PCs.

So, I was rather amused and a bit insulted when I got an email today from a PR person, offering ?a?great idea for?baby?boomer?and senior first time computer buyers looking to be a little bit more tech savvy.?

What an insult. If anything, it?s younger users who are already accustomed to easy-t0-use touch screen devices like the iPad that don?t ever require you to know how to use a mouse.

Here?s the pitch

Looking to get mom, dad or the grandparents onboard with modern technology? ?Here is a great idea for?baby?boomer?and senior first time computer buyers looking to be a little bit more tech savvy- without the challenges that come with typical computers.

Designed for?baby?boomers?and seniors, Telikin is a new touch screen computer that is ready to be used straight out of the box ? plug in and go. No more reading the directions and trying to upload various software programs.??The computers use abold, simple user interface that?s far easier for beginners,?seamlessly connecting seniors to family and friends in a modern fashion ? through video chat, photo sharing, and email. ?Plus, the large, 19 inch screen makes for easy viewing.?
